A new liquid crystal lens is proposed. A plano-convex glass lens coated with transparent indium tin oxide is placed on a plane liquid crystal cell as one of the two electrodes. A nonuniform electric field is thus formed in the liquid crystal layer, which makes the cell act as an optical lens. The lens is of good optical properties and of large size. The profile of the refractive index distribution of the liquid crystal changes with the external voltage, and, as a result, the focal length of the liquid crystal lens changes with the applied voltage.
