3B09 Synthesis and Properties of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal having the Cyano Group at the Lateral Position

Abstract

This paper describes the synthesis and properties of liquid crystals with a chiral group at the terminal position. The homologs show smectic A and C^* phases. The layer spacings of smectic A and smectic C^* phase were examined by an X-ray diffraction and compared with the molecular length calculated by a semi-empirical molecular orbital method. Based on these results, the molecular arrangement in smectic A and C^* phases will be discussed.
