3B10 Molecular Structure and Molecular Arrangement in Liquid Crystal Phase of Asymmetric Liquid Crystal Compounds with a Bent Structure

Abstract

Some derivatives of 4- (4-alkoxyphenoxycarbonyl) phenyl 4- (3, 7-dimethyloctyloxy) -3-nitro and 3- (3, 7-dimethylocthyloxy) -4-nitrobenzoate were synthesized and were observed to show a smectic C^* phase. In the case of the latter, in spite of having a bent structure, it shows liquid crystal phase. Liquid crystalline properties is discussed in terms of the molecular structure calculated by molecular orbital method and X-ray diffraction.
