Mechanical rubbing and chemical modification methods were applied to make up different kinds of surface orientation on the substrates, and then assemble substrates to a slit cell. The anisotropic viscosities of LC in the slit viscometer were measured. Furthermore the effect of rubbing depth on flow behavior was also investigated. The TN cells having different pre-tilt angle (1, 3.5 and 6.5° ) or different rubbing depth (0.3, 0.6 and 1.2mm) were investigated. The response of LC in TN cells depends on gap, pre-tilt angle and rubbing depth. We derived the empirical equations from three elastic constants should be modified as the conditions of the pre-tilt angle and rubbing depth.
