We studied the layer structure in a liquid crystal with cholesteric-chiral smectic C phase transition, which is used as Half-V mode FLC. Our modification of a commercially produced X-ray diffractometer enabled measurement for two axes (ω and χ). The ω-χ profile of the liquid crystal shows a circular high-intensity area containing two peaks, which indicates the existence of both tilted-bookshelf and near bookshelf structures in the direction vertical to the cell substrates. We think that this specific layer structure induces the unclear stripe domains that are often observed in the Half-V mode.
