Wormhole liquid crystal display modes have been proposed. Micron-sized and randomly arranged holes on upper and lower electrodes were formed in order to disturb an electric field. The liquid crystal cells of homeotropic alignment showed excellent transmittance versus voltage characteristics. From optical microscope observation, radial and spherical domains were observed at the electrode holes. The position of these domains was randomly arranged and its shape was hemispherical droplet of liquid crystal. Electro-optical response and viewing angle characteristics were also evaluated.
