Various kinds of photo-cross-linkable polymers were synthesized and applied to a photoalignment layer for liquid crystals (LCs). To estimate an origin of the LC alignment on the photoreacted polymer surfaces, four-types of alignment layers using the same polymer were prepared by combination of exposure with linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light and mechanically rubbing method. As a result, LC alignment direction is dependent on not only anisotropic photoreaction of the photoreactive group, but also length of the spacer and the rubbing direction.
