The smectic properties of some 1, 4-dibenzoyloxybenzene derivatives were examined by DSC, microscopic and X-ray diffraction experiments. The derivatives tend to exhibit nematic and smectic C phase when both terminals are long alkyl and/or alkoxy groups, and exhibit a nematic and smectic A phase, when one of the terminal groups is an electron-withdrawing group. The smectic phases were characterized by a small angle X-ray diffraction method.
