The liquid-crystalline properties of non-symmertic liquid crystals containing cyanobiphenyl and phenylpyrimidine moieties were investigated by polarization microscopy, DSC and X-ray difraction. They exhibited a marked odd-even effect in the phase transitional properties depending on the parity of the spacer. A binary mixture of the non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals with different spacer length was found to show an unusual semctic phase in which a layer reflection was not detected by X-ray studies.
