We have designed and synthesized folic acid derivatives having 2- (3, 4-dialkyloxyphenyl) ethyl-substituted oligo (glutamate) moieties. These compounds show columnar and cubic thermotropic liquid crystallinity through the hydrogen bonding aggregation of pterin rings. The addition of sodium triflate stabilizes the columnar and/or cubic phases. The change of the self-assembled structures has been examined by an X-ray diffractometer and a CD spectrometer. Two different types of Cotton effects are observed in the columnar and cubic states. These results are attributable to the formation of different chiral superstructures of the folic acid derivatives.
