1B10 Discotic liquid crystals of organic metal complexes (70) : Synthesis and discotic lamellar mesomorphism of novel metallomesogens based on bis [1, 3-diphenylpropane-1, 3-dithionato] nickel (II)

Abstract

Four long-chain-substituted disk-like molecules tend to show discotic lamellar (D_L) mesophases. However, there have been very few reports on D_L-showing compounds. To date, four kinds of D_L mesophases have been found. In order to further clarify D_L mesophases, we have synthesized two new metal complexes, la and 1b. It was established from microscopic observation and temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction studies that the mesophase of 1b is a D_<L1> mesophase. We discuss differences between the discotic lamellar mesophases and smectic ones.
