Abstract
We have developed new ion-conductive liquid-crystalline (LC) materials assembling ionic liquids in low dimensions. In this study, ionic liquids, which are non-volatile liquid electrolytes, are used as functional lyotropic solvents for the formation of liquid-crystalline phases. Layer self-assembly of imidazolium ionic liquid and hydroxyl-terminated calamitic molecules gives two-dimensional anisotropic ion-conductive LC materials. In addition, one-dimensional anisotropic ion-conductive LC materials are obtained by columnar assembly between the ionic liquid and fan-shaped molecules having dihydroxyl moiety and fan-shaped ionic liquid crystals alone.
