We investigate how the curvature of a substrate influences the surface nematic-isotropic phase transition. To this end, we study the phase transition of a nematic liquid crystal around a spherical particle. The curvature suppresses the transition and the transition temperature becomes lower with the decrease of the particle radius. The effect of the splay deformation in a nematic liquid crystal on the phase transition behavior will be discussed in detail.
