Abstract
The spatial reorientations of the transition dipole moments of a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) in the smectic-C^* (Sm-C^*) phase have been investigated by use of both conventional and oblique time-resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy, and the spatial orbits of the transition dipole moments in the core moiety have been explored. The orbits draw the ellipsoidal cone and their extreme ends have the shapes of a bent half ellipsoid. The half ellipsoid is not divided by its long or short axis during the electric-field-induced switching.
