The phase behavior of a thermotropic cubic mesogen 4'-n-docosyloxy-3'-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC-22, where "22" is the number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy group) was investigated under hydrostatic pressure by the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. ANBC-22 exhibits a smectic C phase of the layer structure and two types of cubic mesophases, with a space group of Im3m and Ia3d. We found that the smectic C phase transforms into the Im3m phase in a heating process under the ambient pressure while the smectic C phase transforms into the Ia3d phase under a rather mild pressure. The results indicate that the formation of the Im3m and Ia3d cubic phases is strongly path-dependent.
