We performed type II phase matching for the optical third-harmonic generation (THG) in nematic liquid crystals with a fundamental wavelength of 1064 nm for the first time. The phase matching condition of THG is accomplished when the effective refractive index for the fundamental light is equal to that of the TH light. Liquid crystals have the advantage that control of the birefringence is easy by the change of temperature. This suggests that the liquid crystals are promising materials for THG devices.
