Abstract
LC compounds incorporating benzo [1, 3] -oxathiol-2-one or 3H-benzofuran-2-one at the terminal position were synthesized and their thermal properties were examined. The compounds exhibit nematic phase and/or smectic phase. In binary mixtures of 4-octyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl and 5- (3H-benzofuran-2-one) yl 4-nonyloxybenzoate, SmA phases are miscible in the whole region. Therefore, molecular arrangement of SmA phase of both compounds is assumed to be similar. On the other hand, nematic-isotropic transition temperature decreases with increasing molar concentration of 5- (3H-benzofuran-2-one) yl 4-nonyloxybenzoate. The effect of the terminal lactone group on mesomorphic properties will be discussed in terms of molecular structure and electrostatic properties.
