Abstract
Some derivatives of choresteryl 4-alkoxybenzoate, 4-alkoxy-3-nitrobenzoate, and 4-alkoxy-biphenyl-4'-carboxylate were prepared and showed a chiral smectic C (SmC^*) phase as well as smectic A (SmA) and choresteric (Ch) ones. The layer spacings of SmA and SmC^* phases were examined by an X-ray diffraction, and these results are discussed in terms of the molecular structure calculated by a semi-empirical molecular orbital method. Ferroelectric properties of SmC^* phase for these homologues will be also discussed.
