Abstract
N-methyl-quinolinium dialkylsulfosuccinates (MeQu/DCnSS, n=10-18) were synthesized, by an ion exchange procedure. The phase transition was studied by DSC, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The series of MeQu/DCnSS (n=10-18) showed smectic A phase. Fluorescence spectra of MeQu/DCnSS strongly depend on phase transition from crystal to the smectic A phase. The fluorescence intensity increased sharply at the transition, in contrast, the maximum wave length showed a bathochromic shift before the phase transition. These results suggest that the MeQu/DCnSS tend to deform the molecular assembly beforehand in the vicinity of each molecules to prepare the transition.
