PB14 Columnar Liquid Crystals of Chiral Tris (chelated) Metal Complexes

Abstract

With a purpose of studying the effects of Δ Λ isomerism on the stacking structure in a columnar phase, the following tris (chelated) chromium (III) complexes have been attempted to prepare : [Cr (nC8)_3] (n = 0, 2, 3, 5), where nC8 represents a 1, 3-diphenyl-1, 3-diketonato ligand with n octyloxy groups. The compounds were synthesized by neat reactions between [Cr (acac)_3] and a nC8 ligand at 180℃ for 24 hours. Optical resolution of the product complexes was performed by liquid column chromatography. As a result, [Cr (0C8)_3] was resolved completely into each enantiomer, while other complexes were resolved partially. These compounds will be used as a dopant to see the chirality effect on a columnar phase.
