Abstract

Inherently photo responsive chiral dimesogens have been prepared using azobenzene-cholesterol dimesogenic compounds linked by various alkyl chain spacers. Effects of temperature and light on the helical superstructure and photochemical phase transitions have been explored in detail. Our studies show that the mechanism of the pitch change in the cholesteric liquid crystals is due to the variations in smectic fluctuations in the cholesteric helical structure.
