1B15 Spontaneous pattern formation in a smectic liquid-crystalline phase

Abstract

Temperature-gradient wave pattern propagation was observed in a tilted smectic phase of a binary system of polar non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals. Direction of the pattern propagation was controlled by external thermal field. We suggest that cooperative molecular reorganization in a hierarchical structure of the liquid-crystalline system propagates the wave pattern.
