We synthesized poly-p-phenylene and poly-m-phenylene derivatives with fluorine-containing chiral liquid crystal as side chains. They were soluble in common organic solvents and showed blue luminescence. The results of DSC, POM and XRD measurements indicated that the polymers have various liquid crystalline phases. Particularly, some of them showed chiral smectic C (Sc^*) phase which is necessary for generating ferroelectricity. These polymers showed quicker response to an electric field than the polymers with ordinary liquid crystals. In addition, the measurements of spontaneous polarization the present polymers suggested that they possess feasibility of memory function.
