A novel method of evaluation of polar anchoring strength is proposed. Anchoring strength is evaluated from measurement of the optical retardation measured by the symmetric-oblique incident transmission ellipsometry (SOITE). By using the SOITE, anchoring strength can be evaluated accurately without the effect of multi-beam interference (MBI). The advantage of our method was shown experimentally.
