Effect of molecular structure on appearance of the frustrated phase for a polar dimeric liquid-crystalline system

Abstract

A periodic striped pattern was observed in an anticlinic smectic C phase of a homeotropically aligned sample of a binary mixture of polar non-symmetric dimeric liquid crystals. We have investigated effects of spacer,tail and core structures of the dimeric liquid crystals on the spontaneous pattern formation. The wave pattern only appeared in the induced interdigitated SmCanti phase of binary mixtures between the dimeric liquid cystals with a different odd-numbered spacer.
