Abstract
We have prepared some novel U-shaped dimeric liquid-crystalline molecules in which two phenylpyrimidine groups are connected via trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol, p-toluenesulfonamide or cis-2-butene-1,4-diol. The trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol derivative was found to show enantiotropic N and SmA phase with low melting point. On the other hand, the p-toluenesulfonamide derivative showed only a monotropic SmA phase. Furthermore, a SmC phase was found to be induced in a binary phase diagram between the trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol derivative and the cis-2-butene-1,4-diol derivative. We discuss the effect of the linking group on phase transition behavior of the U-shaped system.
