Abstract
Oligopeptides derivatives containing lipophilic amino acids are designed and synthesized for the development of new hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals. These oligopeptides derivatives show thermotropic hexagonal columnar phases. The isotropization temperatures of the columnar phases become higher as the number of the amino acid moieties increases. The FT-IR and X-ray scattering measurements of the materials show the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the oligopeptides along the column axis.
