Abstract
A series of 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-trifuluoromethylpyridine(CnH2n+1OC6H4C5NH3CF3, n=1-8) was prepared and their mesogenicity was observed on POM observation, DSC and X-ray scattering measurements. An enantiotropic SmA phase was observed in n=2-4. Enatiotropic SmA and SmB phases were observed in n=5-8. In the SmA phase of the n=3, obtained layer spacing was 16.8 Å and this value was 1.8 Å larger than the calculated molecular length. This result shows that CF3 groups were separated from the layer in the SmA phase.
