Abstract
Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have been rapidly developed. However, engineers are still seeking new modes, which overcome remaining problems. The reported LCD mode is totally new and can achieve fast response time, high contrast, wide viewing angle, continuous gray level. This display is based on the unique property of the banana shaped LCs. LC molecules exhibit a smectic A-like phase. Because of the bend of the molecules, they do not freely rotate about their long axes, so that quasi-long range order of molecular dipole orientation emerges and the resulting polarization responds to an applied electric field. This order was examined by SHG and analyzed based on 2D Langevin process.
