Abstract
We report the synthesis, behaviors, and organization of liquid crystalline
dimmers consisting of two mesogens linked with a biphenyl moiety. Their properties
were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). They exhibited a smectic A (SmA)
phase. The layer distance observed in the XRD was shorter than the molecular
length calculated in the molecular modeling. The molecular packing structure was
postulated.
