Abstract
A polymerizable benzoic acid derivative, 3,5-bis(propenoyloxymethyl)-4-hexadecyloxy benzoic acid was synthesized and complexed with dipyridyl compounds, 4,4'-bipyridyl, 1,2-dipyridylethane, 1,2-dipyridylethene, and 1,3-dipyridylpropane in the molar ratio of 2:1. All of the 2:1 complexes exhibited a monotropic smectic A liquid crystal phase. Their thermotropic behaviors and layersuperstructures were investigated by polarized optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The complexes in the liquid crystal phase were photo-polymerized by UV irradiation. After the polymerization, it was cofirmed that the multi-layered structure was maintained.
