Abstract
The in-plane switching (IPS) mode generally exhibited wide viewing angle in comparison with other operation modes. Since the response and the contrast, however, are still insufficient, an IPS mode with the amorphous hybrid twisted nematic (a-HTN) configuration was proposed to improve these properties. The a-HTN-IPS mode includes alignment layers of a cellulose derivative for random in-plane orientation without rubbing, resulting in a fast response and a wide viewing angle.
