Abstract
We have proposed a basic concept for the molecular design of smectic liquid crystals exhibiting highly ordered smectic mesophases towards high charge carrier mobility. We designed a series of model materials using anthracene and benzothienobenszothiphene moieties as a core unit and synthesized them. As a result, all the materials designed based on the present molecular design exhibited a highly ordered smectic mesophase of SmE phase at the temperature range next to the crystal phase. In this study, we discuss availability of the present molecular design, and in the following papers, phase transition behaviors and charge carrier transport properties in the model materials are demonstrated.
