Abstract

In the Reverse Twisted Nematic (RTN) LCD, the RTN LC director configuration is realized by applying an AC voltage to a splayed twist cell. The RTN configuration relaxes to an original splayed twist configuration if removing the applying voltage. This process is regarded as a configuration transition and relaxation. To clarify alignment material dependence of this configuration transition/relaxation we fabricated a couple of series of RTN-LCDs by using different polyimide materials as alignment layers and quantified the transitional/relaxational behavior. In this report we are going to give a criterion to realize a stable RTN-LCD and investigate its relation to the LCD performance.
