The electronic conduction in discotic and smectic liquid crystals was established in 1990s. That let us recognize that liquid crystals were a new type of organic semiconductors, i.e., self-organizing molecular semiconductor, and opened a door to a new research field in liquid crystals. Since then, 20 years have passed, and its basic research that has been accumulated slowly but steadily during these decades is going to provide us with a new industrial application of liquid crystals. In this talk, the present status of liquid crystals as an organic semiconductor will be reviewed from materials, properties, and device applications' points of view shortly and the recent progress that promises immediate application to organic field effect transistors will be discussed.
