Abstract
We have prepared sodium poly(styrenesulfonate)s, which have various molecular weight, with quaternary ammonium ions as a counter ion. All copolymers possessed a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water. It was found that these polymers act as a thermo-responsive polymer. However, LCSTs vary greatly among these copolymers at the same condition except for molecular weight. Moreover, in the copolymer of higher molecular weight with a suitable compositional ratio, not only hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition, but also sol-gel phase transition and volume phase transition were observed. Furthermore, we have examined effect of molecular weight on physical gel-forming of these copolymers in detail.
