Abstract
Amino acid ionic liquids(AAILs)are ionic liquids containing amino acids as component ions. We have found that some amphiphilic molecules show good compatibility with these AAILs and exhibit self-organization behavior in them. Instead of water, these AAILs were used as solvents to provide novel lyotropic liquid-crystalline systems whose self-organization behavior is designable. In this study, we examined the effect of amino acid anions on the self-organization behavior of amphiphilic molecules. We synthesized six AAILs and N-{3-[N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aminopropyl]}-3,4-didodecyloxy benzoylamide (1) as an amphiphilic molecule. By mixing these AAILs andamphiphile 1, we succeeded in the preparation of lyotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) systems exhibiting smectic, bicontinuous cubic and hexagonal columnar LC phases depending on the molar ratio.
