We demonstrated a polarization independent, submillisecond response phase modulator utilizing a polymer-cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLC) nano-composite. The ChLC is stabilized by a dense polymer network, which enables it to be electro-optically tuned without deforming the helical structure. Polarization independent phase modulation was achieved owing to an average refractive index tun ing of the composite, which occurs when the LC molecules inside the helical structure is tuned without deformation.
