Binaphthyl derivatives are preferably used as chiral dopants because they show large helical twisting power. In this study, we synthesized binaphthyl derivatives with expanded aromatic rings and investigated the properties of helical twisting power in a namatic phase. As temperature increased, the helical twisting power of (R)-biphenanthrol increased and turned to gradual decline. This feature has been hardly observed in the case of the axial chirality such as binaphthyl derivatives. It is suggested that the temperature dependence of helical twisting power was influenced by introducing aromatic rings into the binaphthyl skeleton.
