Abstract
1,2-bis(4π-n-alkoxybenzoyl)hydrazine (BABH-n, n is the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain) is one of typical bicontinuous cubic (Cub_<bi>) liquid crystalline compounds. The Cub_<bi> phase has three-dimensionally periodic structure. Starting from the BABH-n, we have successfully synthesized eight compounds by extending π-conjugated system in the core part (i.e., benzene ring to biphenyl, stilbene, phenylacetylenephenyl, and naphthyl rings). Irrespective of usual high sensitivity to the chemical structure of the phase formation, very surprisingly, all compounds were found to exhibit the Cub_<bi> phases. In this presentation, we examine the relationship between the size of the core part and the phase transition behavior of the Cub_<bi> phases.
