Natural polymers such as cellulose are known to form cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) phase by their chemical modification in the side chains. We report on the synthesis of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) ester derivatives and their dependence of Bragg reflection wavelength on temperature. The reflection wavelength shifted to longer wavelength upon heating process due to increase in the CLC helical pitch. When the HPCs were chemically modified by both propionyl and cholesteryl side chains, we successfully demonstrated the continuous tuning of a reflection peak in the full visible-wavelength range from 400 nm to 850 nm by controlling the temperature between 35 ℃ and 85 ℃.
