Smectic liquid crystalline polymers (SLCPs) typically exhibit homeotropic orientation on a substrate. In this presentation, we report that two SLCPs with the little difference between acrylate and methacrylate main chains exhibit the opposite LC orientation manners. Poly(cyanobiphenyl acrylate) (PCBA) and poly(cyanobiphenyl methacrylate) (PCBMA) exhibited homeotropic and random planer orientation in thin films, respectively. Alternating overcoating films of PCBA and PCBMA with each other were prepared by inkjet method. We found that the top-coated polymer dominated the LC orientation in the overcoating films.
