High Mechanical Damping via Soft Mode in Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Abstract

We investigate the dynamic viscoelasticity of liquid crystal elastomers under various degrees of imposed tensile static strain. The damping (loss tangent) considerably increases with increasing the imposed static strain in the strain regime before the onset of the director rotation.
