Liquid crystals (LCs) exhibit nonlinear optical effect characteristics based on changes in molecular orientation depending on the incident light intensity. Currently, high light intensity is required to induce nonlinear optical effects, and high light sensitivity of LC materials is strongly desired for device applications. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods grafted with LC polymers were added to dye-doped LCs, and their effect on molecular orientation change upon the irradiation of a light source was investigated. As a result, we succeeded in decreasing the threshold intensity by 39% compared to the case without nanorods.
