Phase transitions in Schiff base mesogens, 2MBAC and 4MBAC, exhibiting two types of SmB phases

Abstract

Re-examination of two Schiff base mesogens, 2MBAC and 4MBAC, by DSC, polarized light microscopy, and X-ray diffraction revealed that they exhibit four liquid crystal phases, N, SmA, and two types of SmB phases, on cooling. We discuss the aggregation structures of their smectic phases and the phase transitions.
