Viologens are functional materials responded to various external stimulus. In this study, novel viologen compounds in which an alkyl chain was introduced at the position of the aromatic ring in the asymmetric core (XNNPmY) were synthesized by the Menshütkin reaction, Zincke reactions and anion metathesis reactions (Figure 2). Comparison of 12NNP12 with 12NNPm12 and 12NNP8 with 12NNPm8 showed that the liquid-crystalline (LC) phases appeared at lower temperatures by changing the alkyl chain attached to the aromatic ring of the core moiety from p- to m-position.
