Abstract

RTN liquid crystals can be driven at low voltages by introducing torsion into the liquid crystal material. RTN require polymer stabilization because they become splay-twisted when no electric field is applied. Since an electric field must be applied during polymer stabilization, transmittance becomes low when no voltage is applied. For this reason, we aimed to improve transmittance by using a dual-frequency driven liquid crystal. We verified whether the RTN structure can be stabilized by applying high frequency and making the Δε of the liquid crystal material negative. The structure and characteristics of the liquid crystal stabilized by the application of high frequency are reported.
