Abstract

1D hybrid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are attractive if they consist of different MOF blocks with interconnected channels. Here, we propose the "photochemical surgery" method, which combines top-down and bottom-up approaches. When photoreactive DTEMOF, for example, was exposed to UV light through a photomask in a solvent, the unmasked part was removed via solubilization to produce a gap. The resulting specimen was immersed in a solution containing the necessary components for constructing DTZEMOF. Eventually, the gap was filled with DTZEMOF to form a triblock hybrid MOF (DTEMOF-DTZEMOF-DTEMOF). "Photochemical surgery" can be applied to synthesize 1D hybrid MOFs bearing unconventional sequences and morphologies.
