Abstract

Viologens are ionic compounds that show liquid-crystalline (LC) phase by designing its molecular structure. In this study, we synthesized a novel viologen (12(NNP1)12) with a lateral methyl group on the aromatic ring of the asymmetric core. 12(NNP1)12 formed the SmA phase at the cooling from an isotropic phase, and it was induced transition to the higher-order SmX phase upon further cooling. In a previous study, transition to a SmC from the SmA phase in the cooling process was observed to in asymmetric viologens without lateral methyl group. We demonstrated that the introduction of a lateral methyl group into the viologen with asymmetric core leads to a more ordered LC phase lower than the SmA phase.
