Abstract

We have focused on holmium (Ho), which has the highest magnetic moment among lanthanide elements and produce materials based on Ho. To improve magnetism and response to external magnetic fields, we focused on liquid crystal and produce magnetic liquid crystal materials based on Ho. In this study, we synthesized Ho complexes with different carbon numbers of the alkoxy side chain. We found that all complexes form cubic phase and maintain cubic phase up to around 150 ℃. Ho complexes showed external magnetic field response at room temperature and paramagnetic properties derived from Ho.
